Sorry, I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted a blog…well, okay, no one’s sorry about that, are they? I blog to increase web presence for my novel, so, when it’s finished, I’ll have resources, complete with history, in place to advertise my product.
Good news today, however! A reason to blog! I’ve been busy working on my novel the last few days for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and realized I’m nearly finished! Less than 1,000 of the required 50,000 words to go! I could finish today! I could finish tomorrow!
And, alas, it is now obvious my novel is oh so much longer than 50,000 words.
Do people still read long, complicated fantasies? I hope so. Of course, if it’s published as an ebook, it’s not so daunting to the reader, is it?

I am not expert, but from what I understand, 50k words is not actually a full novel length anyway. And fantasies especially are expected to be upwards of 100k words. AND there’s the fact that if you’re like most Wrimos, plenty of what you’ve written this month will be thrown out anyway. So don’t worry about that, just keep going. And grats on being almost done!

Further, I’m reading Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84, a trilogy combined into one massive volume. Out of curiosity, I looked up the word count. It’s purported to be 425,000 words. Oy vey, I would love to write half as many!

The entire trilogy is 425,000? That’s less than 150k per book. Not so overwhelming! Because of average or expected word counts for fantasy books, I was worried when I thought the speculative fiction story I’m writing this year was going to end at 75,000 words. It’s so much more fun to just write the story and let it be what it’s going to be.
